Cloud Application Engineer (Mobile Backend Focus)

About the Role

We are seeking a talented and experienced Cloud Application Engineer to design, build, and maintain the scalable cloud platform that serves as the backbone for our mobile application. Your primary responsibility will be to architect and implement a robust, secure, and high-performance cloud solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure that can reliably handle file uploads from our customers' mobile apps and efficiently serve their data back upon request.

You will work at the intersection of mobile and cloud technologies, collaborating closely with our mobile development team to ensure a seamless and responsive user experience. This role requires a strong foundation in cloud services, API design, data storage solutions, and security best practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Design & Develop Cloud Application Infrastructure: Architect and build scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure on AWS or Azure to support our mobile application's backend needs. This includes designing for high availability and fault tolerance .

• Implement File Upload & Data Retrieval Services: Develop robust and performant APIs and services (e.g., RESTful or GraphQL) specifically for handling large file uploads from mobile devices and for serving user-specific data back to the app .

• Manage Cloud Data Storage: Select and configure appropriate cloud storage solutions (e.g., AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage) for efficient file storage and retrieval. Design and manage databases (e.g., AWS DynamoDB, Azure Cosmos DB, SQL) for user data and metadata .

• Ensure Security & Compliance: Implement stringent security measures, including IAM (Identity and Access Management), data encryption at rest and in transit, secure API authentication (e.g., OAuth 2.0, JWT), and secrets management (e.g., AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault). Ensure the application adheres to relevant privacy and security standards .

• Build APIs for Mobile-Mobile & Cloud-Mobile Integration: Develop and maintain reliable APIs that enable the mobile app to pull individual user data and interact with the cloud backend. Ensure API performance, reliability, and versioning .

• Automate & Optimize Infrastructure: Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or CloudFormation to automate the provisioning and management of cloud resources . Implement CI/CD pipelines (e.g., using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps) for automated testing and deployment .

• Monitor Performance & Reliability: Set up comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting systems (e.g., using CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Datadog) to track application health, performance, and user activity. Proactively identify and resolve potential issues .

• Collaborate with Mobile Team: Work closely with mobile developers (iOS and Android) to define API contracts, optimize data transfer, and troubleshoot integration issues. Provide technical guidance on best practices for mobile-cloud communication .

Qualifications

• Experience: 5+ years of experience in cloud application engineering, with a focus on backend services for mobile applications .

• Cloud Expertise: Deep hands-on experience with AWS or Azure. Strong knowledge of their core services (compute, storage, networking, databases, and serverless). Experience with both is a strong plus .

• Programming Languages: Proficiency in backend development languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or C# .

• Data & Storage: Experience with object storage (S3/Blob Storage), relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server), and NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, Cosmos DB) .

• API Development: Strong experience designing and building RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL APIs .

• DevOps & Automation: Solid experience with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes/AKS/EKS) .

• Security Mindset: A strong understanding of cloud security best practices, including IAM, encryption, and secure application design .

• Problem-Solving: Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across the application and infrastructure stack .

Bonus Points

• Experience with cross-platform mobile frameworks like React Native or Flutter .

• Experience with mobile-specific app store deployment and distribution processes (App Store, Google Play) .

• Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer - Associate, Azure Developer Associate) .

• Experience with AI/ML services in a cloud environment
